The Troy Trojans (11-12, 6-7) picked up a 3-2 win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (9-16, 5-8) on the road on Thursday.
Southern Miss took the first set 25-21 but Troy tied things up with a 25-23 win in the second. Troy then took the third by a score of 25-19 only for Southern Miss to dominate the fourth 25-14 and force a fifth and deciding set. The score was tied 13-13 in the fifth set when Troy’s Sarah Bates earned a kill and then Ella Broadhead and Janelle Stuempfig made the match-winning block to give the Trojans the 15-13 win.
“That was a tremendous team effort and team win tonight. It wouldn’t have been possible without an absolutely career night from Tori Hester,” Troy Coach Josh Lauer said. “She was great offensively and defensively and really led our team. I’m also really proud of the effort that Sara Bates put in and the service run by Olivia Grantham in the 5th set was clutch. We’re banged up and we had a lot of people contribute at the right times tonight for us to be successful. So, it was a really great and gritty resilient team victory.”
Troy’s Tori Hester had a huge night for the Trojans, earning a season high 33 kills, which is also a season-high for any Sun Belt player. Bates added nine kills and 14 digs, while Sydney Austin added eight kills and three blocks. Stuempfig earned 45 assists and 10 digs.
Southern Miss was led by Sadie McAda with 14 kills and 18 digs.
