Troy falls to Appalachian State in five sets

The Troy Trojasn (12-13, 7-8) lost a Sun Belt Conference match at home to the Appalachian Sate Mountaineers (17-7, 11-2) by a score of 3-2 on Thursday.

Troy comes in to the conference series with Appalachian State this week in fourth place of the Sun Belt West, while Appalachian State is in first place of the Sun Belt East. Troy lost the first set 25-13 but came back swinging and tied things up with a 25-21 in the second. Appalachian State won the third set by a score of 25-22 but Troy forced a fifth set with a 25-23 win in the fourth. In the final set, Appalachian State won 15-10 to take the match.

“We didn’t cash it in after that first set,” Troy Coach Josh Lauer said. “We came out really flat in the first set. I’m glad that we didn’t just cash it in. We kind of battled through there.

“The bottom-line tonight is that we were not consistent enough. We didn’t get enough contribution across the board. We didn’t match App State’s balance and consistency. Kudos to them. They really hung in there and distributed the ball well.”

Tori Hester was honored before the match for breaking the school kills record and she had another big night for the Trojans with a season-high 35 kills along with one ace, nine digs and a block. It also extended her nation leading double digit kill streak to 47 straight matches.

Kalina Calvillo added eight kills and Janelle Stuempfig chipped in with 44 assists and nine digs. Appalachian State was led by Elise Marchal with 15 kills, eight digs and seven blocks, while Maya Winterhoff added 13 kills and nine blocks.

Troy and Appalachian State rematch Friday night at Trojan Arena at 6 p.m.
