The Troy Trojans (11-6, 4-2) snapped a two game losing streak on Wednesday with a resounding 77-58 Sun Belt Conference road win against the ULM Warhawks (4-15, 0-6).
The two sides battled back-and-forth in the first half with Troy hanging on to a slim 35-30 lead at halftime, but the second half was all Troy. The Trojans outscored ULM 42-28 in the second half and shot 48.5 percent from the field in the second half.
Troy shot 48.4 percent for the entire game compared to 31.8 percent shooting from ULM. The Trojans also won the rebound battle 48-32 and outscored the Warhawks 36-16 in the paint along with blocking six shots as a team.
“We did a lot of good things. I thought we played really well offensively. We had 21 assists to 13 turnovers,” Troy Coach Scott Cross said. “I would like the turnover number to be a little bit lower, but man that assists number is a beautiful thing. I can’t remember the last time we had 20 assists. We were really moving the ball and sharing the ball. Made 11 threes: that’s really good for us. I am super happy that Thomas Dowd got going, and man, what a job Kerrington Kiel did.”
Troy saw a pair of Trojans earn double-doubles in the win. Coming off a 32-point performance this past weekend, Tayton Conerway tallied 10 points, 12 assists and three steals. His 12 assists were just two shy of tying the Troy single-game record. Kerrington Kiel also earned the first double-double of his career with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Dothan native Thomas Dowd also just missed out on a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Cooper Campbell also scored a career-high 16 points, while Jackson Fields grabbed eight boards and Victor Valdes blocked two shots. For ULM, both Colite Young and Jacob Wilson scored 16 points.
Troy is back on the road this Saturday against rival South Alabama at 3 p.m. in a game that will air on ESPN+ with the legendary Alabama Sportscaster of the Year Barry McKnight also calling the game on the Troy Sports Media Network.
