The Troy Trojans (13-7, 6-3) earned a resounding 70-61 Sun Belt Conference win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles (9-12, 4-5) at home on Monday.
The Trojans didn’t trail a single time in the contest and led by as many as 27 points. Troy shot 40 percent from the field in the win, while Southern Miss shot 39.7 percent. The Trojans also won the rebound battle 43-33 and forced 16 turnovers, scoring 20 points off turnovers.
“I thought for the majority of the game we played outstanding defense and did a great job rebounding the basketball. But the last 10 minutes we got really, really sloppy,” Troy Coach Scott Cross said. “Turned the ball over five or six times, gave up three or four offensive rebounds, didn’t defend, didn’t dive on the floor for loose balls and made stupid fouls. So, it was disappointing. That’s a game where guys like Kameryn Mitchell, Braydon Whitaker and Jackson Porch should have played like six minutes in that game. We didn’t do what we needed to do.”
Troy was led in the win by Tayton Conerway with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Dothan’s Thomas Dowd contributed a season-high 15 points with nine rebounds and one block. Theo Seng also scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Myles Rigsby earned seven points, five rebounds and two blocks. Southern Miss was led by Denijay Harris with 21 points and seven rebounds.
Next, Troy remains home for a matchup with Georgia Southern at Trojan Arena on Thursday at 6 p.m. This will be the third of four straight home games for the Trojans. Troy now sits tied for second place of the Sun Belt with South Alabama, Appalachian State and Marshall. Arkansas State sits alone at the top of the division.
