The Social Security remote office is open again in Pike County.
The office, located on the lower level of the Pike County Courthouse, was closed in April due to budget cuts. In fact, patrons going to the office the week of April 20 found a note taped to the door saying simply the office was closed “until further notice due to budget cuts.”
But it’s open once again, from 9 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays. Patty Patterson, regional communications director, said the remote office is staffed by employees from the Montgomery office each week. “These employees are able to provide a variety of services to local residents at this remote site,” Patterson said. “They can assist with change of address, direct deposit applications and for requesting Medicare replacement cards.”
Patterson said the staff at the Troy remote office can assist with information regarding filing for benefits and set up appointments. “The employees will have information about general benefits of matters dealing with Social Security,” Patterson said. “However, the remote office will not always be equipped to take disability applications. That requires a secure system and the equipment to do that is not always accessible.” Disability applications may be filed at www.socialsecurity.gov. Patterson said those who need assistance with filing or who have issues they want to discuss with a Social Security representative may make appointments for telephone conversations or visits to the Montgomery office by calling 1-800-772-1213 or 1-866-593-0914. The remote site staff will assist with making those appointments as time permits.
