The Pike County Bulldogs fell to 0-4 in areas play Friday be virtue of a 10-0 shutout loss to Headland on the road.

“We played fairly well defensively, but we just didn’t hit the baseball,” said PCHS head coach Nathan Fordham.

The two teams played both Thursday and Friday, with Headland outscoring the Bulldogs by a combined score of 24-2.

Rather than blaming the outcomes on his team’s performance, Fordham said Headland deserved to win both games.

“But, you have to give all the credit to Headland,” Fordham said.

“I can’t take anything away from them because they’re a good ball team. They really hit the ball well these last couple of days, and we didn’t.”

The loss drops Pike County’s overall record to 3-8, which includes a stretch that has seen the Bulldogs have lose six of their seven games played since March 5.

The fortunate news for Pike County, however, is that the Bulldogs will next face Bullock County, a team they have already beaten once this season by a score of 15-4.

The other two games will be area games against Abbeville, and Fordham said he feels the Bulldogs should have a shot to end the season on a high note.

“We’re just going to try and go out and play the game,” Fordham said. “We feel like we can be very competitive in these last three games, if not win them.” While the season may be lost in terms of postseason play, Fordham said the last three games could have an impact on the Bulldogs as they turn their attention to the 2011 season. “At this point, we just want to try and get some momentum rolling so we can be on a positive note heading into next season,” Fordham said.

Pike County returns to action Monday on the road at Bullock County at 4 p.m.
