Those folks on the popular television “competition” show think they can dance.
Well, the Troy University dancers know they can dance and, after Friday night, everyone will know.
The Troy University Department of Theater and Dance will present “Beginnings,” a winter dance concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23 at the Claudia Crosby Theater.
“Beginnings” will feature the Troy University Dance Repertory Ensemble and Troy Dance, Too! Junior Ensemble along with guest dancers from the Andalusia Ballet, the Centre of Performing Arts in Daphne, Images Dance Ensemble from Grissom High School in Huntsville and West Main Studios in Cullman.
“This will be a tremendous night of dance,” said Deborah Hicks Troy University coordinator of dance and concert director.
“‘Beginnings’ is an opportunity to expose the Department of Theater and Dance to the community and an opportunity for those who are interested in dance to know what we have to offer here at Troy University.”
“Beginnings” will feature all forms of dance except hip-hop.
The hour and a half show will include 14 numbers by the Troy University ensembles and the guest dancers.
“We auditioned a lot of studios around the state for our guest spots and we have four of the best studios on the program,” Hicks said.
“We are excited to bring dance to Troy University and excited to be able to present a dance program to the community.”
“We go from New York to Chicago to Havana. It’s going to be a high-energy, excellent program.”
In its year of transformation, Hicks said seven dancers were recruited and their talent and enthusiasm for dance has permeated the theater department.
“They are awesome dancers and they have made Troy University their home,” she said.
“We now have 12 guys who are doing big musical theater numbers.
In just one semester, interest in dance has grown to the point that our dance classes are all full.”
Tickets for “Beginnings” are $5 for the general public and free for Troy University students with student ID.
Tickets are available at the Trojan Center box office and will be available at the door.
