One of Pike County’s own has been chosen as one of seven individuals across the state to serve on an Alabama Board.

Pike County Sheriff Russell Thomas was appointed by the state Sheriff’s Association to represent the group on the Board of Commissioners of Alabama Peace Officers’ Annuity and Benefit Fund.

Thomas said as a member he will assist with managing a retirement benefit fund for Alabama Peace officers.

“It’s nice to be chosen to serve on a seven-member board for the state,” Thomas said.

Thomas will serve on the board for four years, and this year, he said, he is the newest member.

Other members are appointed, one from the Association of Chiefs of Police, State Police Association, two elected and one appointed by the governor.

Thomas said through his membership, several Pike County residents will benefit, since there are some peace officers on his board.

The fund managed by the board comes through things like court costs, individuals who pay into the fund and other services who make donations.

The board meets once a month, and Thomas has waived his compensation for service.
