The Troy Parks and Recreation varsity youth football team took out the Brundidge Bulldogs Monday night to secure a spot in the Dale County Football Association Super Bowl. The Troy Redskins beat Brundidge 38-12 on a chilly night at the Troy Sportsplex.
“We had speed tonight,” coach Darius Carlisle said. “We just had more speed and more desire.”
Carlisle is in his first season coaching the Redskins and he is excited, just like the players, about playing for a championship.
“I feel good about playing in the championship,” quarterback Mondaris Dixon said. “I had a kick return for a touchdown tonight, and I hope I can do it next week too.”
Running back Rod Roberson also had a good game for the Redskins, as he accounted for a pair of touchdowns.
“I feel like I played good,” Roberson said. “I just want us to play our hardest next week.”
The Redskins were excited about their big win over Brundidge, but they know they are not finished yet.
“It feels good to win,” Khristopher McKinney said. “We have to play hard in the championship.”
The Redskins rely on a speedy offense and a stiff defense that has helped them to be successful.
Defensive coach Carlos “Gameday” Carlisle was impressed with how the defense played, and they believe that will be a big factor in the championship.
“The defense held them all night,” Darius Carlisle said. “You can’t ask for more than that.”
The Redskins came into the season with a first-year coaching staff, and many did not think they would have a shot at the championship.
“I always thought we could,” Darius Carlisle said. “People thought we couldn’t do it, but we’re proving them wrong.”
The Redskins are in the championship this Saturday, and the excitement is continuously building.
“Ah man, big time excited,” Darius Carlisle said about how excited the team was. “I can’t even express it, and this was our first year in the league as coaches too. We’re all excited about what we’ve accomplished. We’re just ready to go down there and win it all.”
The championship game is in Fort Rucker on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
