The single header of the double header of the Trojan Stampede ended after a long weekend of rodeo in Troy.

Saturday’s event is called a single header because it is a one-round rodeo, meaning there isn’t a second round or average, basically winner take all.

The Trojan teams swapped places with each other from the first round as the men were able to improve to second place (756), just falling short of first behind Missouri Valley College (825).

“The guys carried momentum from last weekend and pulled off a second place finish which is good being so mentally and physically tired with the long weekend,” Troy coach Josh Simmons said.

The women were not quite as successful as they were in the first rodeo, finishing in fourth place (230.5).

“It was a mediocre rodeo for the women,” said Simmons. “They finished second overall on Friday night. The girls worked hard, the cattle took us out of a couple events, but I’m happy with the way it turned out in such a hard situation and it was a great performance, we were just taken out with penalties.”

Jake Thomas and Ty Etheridge took first in team roping (6.5), with teammates Clint Keller and Mark Gentry right on their heels in second (6.6) while Ben Mayworth also finished second in calf roping (9.2).

Mary Owens finished second in barrel racing (17.48), missing first place by .01, and Tabitha Kiker finished third in breakaway roping (3.0).

This weekend was the first time coach Simmons hosted and put on a home event and everything ran very smoothly from start to finish.

“I think it went great for my first rodeo with all the help from the volunteers and the support I had, I was excited to learn from this one so next year can be even better,” Simmons said.

The Trojans have about a month until their next rodeo starting November 20 at Murray State University.

“I’m proud of the guys and girls and we are going to work on the core and fundamentals before the next rodeo, I believe it’s not too long until we have a first place finish,” said Simmons.
