David Fleming had the Colquitt (Ga.) American Legion Post 165 baseball team fooled Tuesday night at Riddle-Pace Field.
Fleming struck out 15 batters in five innings of work, allowing zero runs on two hits and walking two batters. Troy won 10-0.
&uot;My fastball felt great tonight,&uot; Fleming said. &uot;I was just turning it loose and it felt great. And I have never struck out 15 batters in five innings. But I was more worried about not letting them score. That bases loaded situation (in the fifth inning) kind of scared me. I just wanted to get the shutout.&uot;
Fleming got the shutout and Post 70 coach Barry Haynes was impressed with how lights out Fleming was Tuesday.
&uot;Fleming pitched great out there and he was just blowing the fastball by those guys,&uot; Haynes said. &uot;He didn’t even have to use his curve ball much.&uot;
Fleming retired seven straight batters before Carson Ray punched a single into right field. That was Colquitt’s only baserunner until the fifth inning when Fleming walked a batter, allowed a hit, struck out a batter, walked the bases loaded and struck out the final two batters in the inning.
The Trojans finished the job with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Troy opened the scoring in the first inning with two runs. Dario Rouse and Daniel Hartley each scored a run. Rouse, Hartley, Jake Smith, Nathan Barron and Jared Rogers each scored a run in the second to push the lead to 7-0 for Troy.
Rouse, Chance Shaver and Fleming each scored in the fifth to end the game.
Hartley led the Trojans, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Shaver was 2-for-3 with one run scored. Rouse was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and one stolen base.
In game two, Smith and Harrison Reeves combined for a no-hitter on the mound and Troy won 10-0 again. Smith threw the first three innings and struck out five batters and walked two. Reeves relieved Smith in the fourth and struck out three batters, while walking one.
Mitch McLeod led the charge at the plate, going 1-for-2 with a double, two walks, a stolen base and three runs scored. Hartley was 1-for-2 with three more RBIs.
Chase Connell went 2-for-2 at the plate with a stolen base and three runs scored. Sam Carroll and Shaver each scored two runs. Shaver was 1-for-1 with three walks and two RBIs.
Up next for Post 70 is a game in Northridge Friday beginning at 6 p.m.
