Pike County falls short in one-run loss to Elba

The Pike County High School Lady Bulldogs fell just one short against the Elba High School Lady Tigers 4-3 Thursday evening in Elba.
The Lady Bulldogs started strongly enough, with Jessica Henderson sending Haley Dansby in for one.
Allison Holland checked in a bunt to send Santerica Willams in for a two point lead.
Dansby passed the plate one more time on a pass ball, and the Lady Bulldogs held the lead until the bottom of the sixth inning.
&uot;There was a lot of spirit in the dugout once we got ahead,&uot; Pike County High School head coach Wayne Grant said.
Just two dropped balls later and the Lady Tigers were knocking on the door.
&uot;Those dropped balls had some heads drooping but the girls came out and held right on,&uot; Grant said.
Another run from Elba and the game was tied at 3-all.
The game stayed at a tie until the bottom of the ninth when another dropped ball put a Lady Tiger on first.
A quick single up centerfield gave the Lady Tigers the go ahead run to end the game at 4-3.
&uot;Those three balls killed us tonight,&uot; Grant said. &uot;Now we are in the losers bracket but we are not going to give up.&uot;
Elba went on to beat Straughn High School with another 4-3 score, making the Straughn Lady Tigers the second team in the loser's bracket.
The PCHS Lady Bulldogs will play the Straughn Lady Tigers today at 4 pm.
