Troy-Pike Habitat for Humanity’s Construction Item Sale on Saturday could have put more money in the organization’s coffer and it could have put less.

So, Fred Johnson, executive director, said the $800 raised was just right.

“The way I look at it is that the sale was a great success,” he said. “If we can raise $800 every month with construction item sales, that will be nearly $10,000 in a year’s time and that’s a lot of money.”

For the Troy-Pike Habitat’s first construction items sale, Johnson said that he was pleased and encouraged.

“We had a brand new 54-inch Whirlpool tub with jet and it went fast,” he said. “So, we know big items will sell. But we sold a variety of other items from paint to lumber to storm doors. I think when more people know about the sale, we’ll do even better.”

The storehouse of materials was created from donated building materials that couldn’t be used in constructing new Habitat homes.

“We still have a quite a large inventory and, hopefully, we’ll have a construction item sale every month,” Johnson said.

“One construction company owner came by and said than he is going to start donating his excess materials to Habitat.

“It would really be great if other construction companies or individuals would do that. That would keep a lot of these materials out of the landfill and, at the same time, would help us raise money to build more houses in partnership with people in need.”

Troy-Pike Habitat for Humanity will dedicate the Simmons’ house, which is its 11th house, at 10 a.m. on Oct. 15.

“A house dedication is the most special part of Habitat,” Johnson said. “It’s what Habitat is all about.”

The Simmons house is located on Highway 93 north in Brundidge.

A blitz build is planned for the Pennington House on Martin Luther King Drive in Troy on Nov. 3, 4 and 5.

Johnson said workers are needed for the heavier work on the first day and for lighter work on the second and third days.

“We always need and appreciate workers,” he said. “It’s best if we know ahead of time but we welcome help when we see it coming.”
