Kathryn Smith Morgan

Kathryn Smith Morgan of Columbus, Georgia passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2006 at the Columbus Hospice House.

Visiting hours will be from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Central time on Saturday, July 1 followed by a memorial service at Langley Funeral Home, 21837 Highway 280, Camp Hill, Al. 36850; phone: (256) 896-2571. The family will also receive friends and family at home in Columbus on Friday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Kathryn Smith Morgan was born Kathryn Land Smith on July 27, 1916 in Camp Hill. She was the daughter of Lillian Land Smith and John Gideon Smith and the younger sister of Evenly Smith Pinnell. In March of 1946 she married W. Lamar Morgan of Troy who preceded her in death after almost sixty years of marriage in 2005. Mrs. Morgan was a devoted teacher wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend.

After earning her teaching certificate at Troy State University in Troy, Mrs. Morgan began teaching in Daviston, Alabama. She then earned her bachelor's degree at Auburn University and taught at Central High School in Phenix City and Beallwood Elementrary in Columbus. Her teaching career spanned almost forth years and she continued to be active in and supportive of the schools long after she retired.

Mrs. Morgen enjoyed helping others and did so all of her life. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and then Morningside Presbyterian in Columbus where she served for many years as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the ladies' circle. Those who met her were always impressed by her sharp wit and touched by her kind heart. Mrs. Morgan was known for her generosity; she followed her family's tradition of true Southern hospitality and seldom allowed her guests to leave without refreshments or some small token of her love.

Mrs. Morgan touched many lives in her own long lifetime. It is for her kindness and devotion to helping others, her great love of education and her strong generous spirit that we will remember her.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, David and Sally Morgan; granddaughter, Jennifer Morgan and grandson-in-law, Jonathan Lewis, Jessica and Chris Symonds, niece and nephew, Martha and Dan Pharris and their daughter, Robin.

Wendol Wade Crowder

Wendol Wade Crowder died quietly Wednesday afternoon after a long illness.

Mr. Crowder was born in Linwood, Alabama in 1914, but grew up in Montgomery.

He was a graduate of Lanier High School and Auburn University.

He was also a veteran of WWII.

After the war he worked for the Veterans Administration.

He retired in 1979 to his cattle farm in Linwood, which is near Troy.

Mr. Crowder is survived by his daughter, Carolyn Zoe Crowder, and his twin sons, Tom and Jerry Crowder.

He had four grandchildren, Cory Crowder, Christin Crowder, Matthew Crowder and Cameron Crowder.

He is also survived by his brother, John M. Crowder of West Blockton, Alabama.

Mr. Crowder was pre-deceased this past February by his wife of 65 years, Rosamond Barnett Crowder. He was 92 years old.

A memorial service will be held at Dillard Funeral Home Chapel in Troy on Thursday, July 6, 2006 at 2:00 PM.
