A manhunt ensued in Brundidge Monday after a suspect attempted to rob a local gas station.

It was reported to officers around 7:08 p.m. a black male entered the BP Station on U.S. Highway 231 in Brundidge and demanded money from the clerk, said Brundidge Lt. Charles Mike Wilson.

“He demanded money. He never pulled out a gun, but he kept patting his belt like he had one,” Wilson said.

Officer Larry Sapp was the first to arrive on scene Monday night.

“I parked at the Hardee’s and went around between the 18-wheelers parked there,” Sapp said.

He then said he entered the BP parking lot, told customers to leave the scene and pursued the suspect on foot until he was lost in the woods across the street at Dollar General Store.

The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 5’6 to 5’7 in height and weighing around 150 to 160 pounds.

He was dressed in a dark jacket, blue jeans, a black hat and a yellow shirt at the time of the incident.

Sapp said he is believed to be the same person to shoplift from the Dollar General Store earlier that night.

He and two other individuals were together when the Dollar General shoplifting occurred, but the suspect entered the BP Station alone Monday night.

During the pursuit Sapp said the suspect dropped a package of underwear that was taken from Dollar General.

The Department of Corrections K-9 Unit arrived on scene around 8:30 p.m., and the dog team attempted to track the suspect’s scent.

As of press time Monday, the suspect was not in custody of the Brundidge Police Department.

The Pike County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the incident.
