J. C. Harden

Services for J. C. Harden, 98, of Banks who died Thursday, May 20, 2004 at his son's home will be at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 23, 2004 at Dillard Funeral Home Chapel in Troy with Elder Cary Sanders and Rev. Averyt Walker officiating.

Burial will be in Ramah Baptist Church Cemetery, in the Josie Community, under the direction of Dillard Funeral Home of Troy.

Visitation was from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

As a young man he worked in a sawmill in order to raise money to get married. He was a published author of a book on the Harden family.

Mr. Harden was the oldest graduate of TSU at 78 years old. He was a member of Ramah Baptist Church and a deacon of 70 years and was also active in Sacred Heart singing, the Farm Bureau, the Rotary Club and the Pike Museum. He taught singing school for 82 years and was part of the Enon Quartet on the radio for 7 years.

Mr. Harden was preceded in death by his wife of 76 years, Gladys Harden, in September 2001, after being her primary caregiver for over 7 years.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Lurlean and Alex Crowers of Front Royal, Virginia; sons and their wives, Alfred and Helen Harden, Thelton and Martha Harden, Jerrell and Jeanette Harden all of Banks, Doyle and Elvita Harden of El Paso, Texas and Leo and Pat Harden of Orange, Virginia;eighteen grandchildren, twenty seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Leona King, Ollie King and Doris (Denzil) Floyd; two brothers and their wives, Edgar and Marzella Harden and John and Lena Kate Harden and several nieces and nephews

Pallbearers are Clay Harden, Dale Harden, Joe Harden, Ronald Harden, Russell Harden and Stacy Harden.

Honorary pallbearers are members of the Troy Rotary Club.

The family request memorials be made to Wiregrass Hospice or the Ramah Cemetery Fund.
