Bradley Garrett of Troy has been disqualified as a Republican candidate for County Commission District 3 in the 2004 June primary.

Garrett was disqualified after a determination by the Pike County Board of Registrars that he is a resident of District 1, not District 3.

Garrett, who lives on the Gardner Bassett Road within the Troy city limit, said that he is a voting resident of District 3 and has been for years.

"As of 9 o'clock Friday morning, I was in District 3," Garrett said. "An hour later, I was told that I was in District 1. We have always been in the city limits but when the city was allowed to vote in county elections, probably about 15 years ago, we were put in District 3 and that's where we have voted ever since. We voted there as recently as Sept. 9."

Garrett said he doesn't know when his voting place changed to District 1 and, if it did, he is curious to know why he was not informed.

Donnie Ingram, chairperson of the Pike County Republican Party, said she was notified by a local citizen that Garrett was possibly not a resident of District 3.

The notification was a challenge to the candidacy and it had to be clarified.

Ingram said the district lines in that area follow the Troy city limit.

"The county engineer Herb Huner rode the miles to form a legal description and it was determined that he (Garrett) lives in District 1," Ingram said. "Once that was clearly determined, he could not be qualified as a candidate in District 3."

After Garrett's disqualification on Friday, his brother, Johnny Garrett, qualified as a candidate for the Pike County Commission District 3.

"I have always wanted to run for public office and thought about running this time," Garrett said. "When Bradley told me he was running, I decided not to run. But his disqualification opened the door for me. I'm going to give it my best shot and would like to have the chance to serve the people of District 3."
