After a week of rest due to graduation exams, the Goshen softball team is set to return to action today with two games in Troy as part of the Trojan Classic, hosted by Charles Henderson.

Head coach Dee Hughes said the team is excited about returning to play after the lengthy layoff.

“Practice has been going good,” Hughes said. “The girls are excited about getting to play again. We were excited about getting to play our opener, but having to take a whole week off after that was kind of tough.”

While the time off may have been frustrating for the Eagle players, it did give the team ample time to prepare for the challenge facing the team.

“We’re definitely going to see a lot faster pitching, so we’ve really been working hard at the plate,” Hughes said.

“We know we’re going to see some changing speeds, so we’ve worked on that as well.”

Goshen will play two games today in pool play before advancing to tournament play Saturday.

The challenge of having to play multiple games in just two days means the Eagles will be forced to dig deeper into their pitching reserves than they have so far this season.

In Goshen’s only game so far this season, the Eagles defeated Ariton 12-2 in six innings. Alli Warrick pitched a complete game for the Eagles in the win.

“We’ve also worked on getting more out of our pitching staff because we know we’re going to have to have all of them,” Hughes said.

“Alli Warrick pitched in our opener, but we know we’ve got to be able to rely on other pitchers, so you’ll probably see Amanda Griggs and Haley Hughes as well.”

Goshen is set to take on Headland today at 5 p.m. and will face Marbury at 8 p.m.

Hughes said the reputation of the Eagles’ first opponent has preceded it.

“We’ve heard a little bit about Headland,” Hughes said.

“They’re a younger team, but they’ve had strong showings in two tournaments already. They’ve started to gain some respect in the wiregrass, so we know we’re going to face a good team.”
