The Charles Henderson varsity softball team will be in tournament action for the second time this season, and hoping for a better outcome this time around.

It was the Northview tournament where the Trojans did not win a game, dropping four-straight games, but now CHHS is hoping for better luck on its home turf.

The Trojan Classic will be taking place this weekend at the Troy Sportsplex, and CHHS is hoping to get back on track.

“For this tournament, I think we are going to come in more prepared and ready to play,” head coach Chad Lapp said Thursday during the team’s practice.

“I thought defensively, we played pretty well (in the Northview Tournament) but we couldn’t get anything going offensively and it really hurt us.

“Playing at home will be something that I think will also prove to be a difference for this tournament,” the coach added.

The tournament itself will feature 19 different varsity schools from around the state.

“We are going to have teams from all over place be a part of this tournament,” Lapp said. “There will be a good pool of talent participating.”

Tonight’s game against Elmore County will be the first home game for the Trojans since its opening night win over Enterprise.

“It will be good to be home again,” Ladd laughed.

“But I think since then, this team has come along way.”

One of the main things Lapp said the girls have improved upon is team communication, which the coach called an important part of the game. The last time the Trojans took the field more than a week ago on Feb. 25, which was a 7-4 win over Loveless Academy Magnet School.

Even with the delay, Lapp said he believes his benefited from the short break.

“I like that we have had some time off since our last game,” the coach said. “A team can learn more during a practice than a game – a game relies more on reaction than anything else.

“We have been able to really try and fix some of the problems we had earlier in the season. “It’s always good to have some time off in between games,” Lapp added.

With essentially all Trojan home games throughout the weekend, Lapp said he hopes to have a good following from the community.

“I am hoping for a big turn out,” the coach said. “These girls have work extremely hard on the field and in the weight room and this weekend is a perfect opportunity for everyone to come see them as well as other good games.”

The Trojans will kick off the tournament with its game against Elmore County at 5 p.m. at the Sportsplex.
