The Troy State football team will not practice for a couple of months yet, but several players were seen around town Saturday.

A group of Trojans volunteered to help Troy run its Soapbox Derby race. The Trojans loaded and unloaded the cars and helped lift heavy items.

"It wasn't hard for the players," wide receivers coach Arlington Nunn said. "The cars only weighed 200 pounds, and most of the players could lift that by themselves. I had a little trouble with them, but the players didn't."

The players got out to the track early Saturday morning and had to wait around for about an hour and a half before the race began.

Some had to leave before the race ended at 2:30 p.m., but a few managed to stay until the end. Nunn, Marrio Fraser and DeWhitt Betterson were the last ones to leave.

Saturday's weather was hot, but Nunn said he enjoyed the experience.

"The kids were excited," Nunn said. "They were coming up to the players and asking them for their autographs and getting their pictures made with the players."

Nunn said if he is involved in next year's race, he might change things a little.

"I think we need to have two shifts," Nunn said. "Two shifts could work three hours each to divide the time up."

The Trojans who helped Saturday were Betterson, Fraser, Adrian Ghent, Chris Cox, Cedric Phillips, Derrick Ansley, Kurbie Bodiford, Cedric Sullivan, Aaron Leak, Martin Teal, Torre Lankford and Johnny Faulk.
