The announcement by Gov. Bob Riley of the expansion of KW Plastics in Troy is yet another example of how home-grown companies can make a dramatic, long-term impact on the life of a community.

A partner in the company, which operates in Alabama, Georgia, California, Illinois and Pennsylvania, Kenny Campbell gave credit for keeping existing industry at home to local officials.

That's indicative of the type of commitment our local elected and appointed officials have in improving both economic and social aspects of our community.

Whether it's a small business just starting out, or whether it's a large corporation investing $20 million into Pike County soil, it's evident that our officials are serious about helping existing industry not only survive but thrive in our community.

Riley recognized this point in his remarks at the Thursday afternoon press conference, saying that much of the growth statewide is due to such commitment by local officials to existing industry.

KW Plastic's innovative recycling processes are also proof of how strong our community's pioneer spirit is.

"Right here in Alabama," Riley said of the nation's newest paint can's development.

We'd add to that: "Right here in Pike County."
