The Troy State baseball team has seen a number of recruits sign the letter of intent forms lately.

A total of 16 players have already signed to play for Troy State, and head coach Bobby Pierce is happy so far.

"I'm pleased with our signings," Pierce said. "There are a couple more that may sign with us, but we've had a good year so far."

One of the most important signees was Pike Liberal Arts School pitcher Justin Sims. Sims played for Charles Henderson until his senior season. Sims could get a chance to contribute right away.

"I'm very excited to have Justin join our baseball program," Pierce said. "We need left-handers in our program. I can't say right now where he might get a chance to play, but he certainly will get the chance to compete."

Sims was attractive to Troy State for more reasons than simply his pitching ability. Troy State has not had excellent attendance in baseball the past few years and certainly did not have great attendance this year.

Since Sims is from Troy, there may be an added bonus.

"I think it's always special when you can get a talented kid from the surrounding area," Pierce said. "That tends to get people excited."

Sims may not be the last player from Pike County to sign with Troy State. Another senior is being recruited by the Trojans.

Sims is also not the only pitcher to join the Trojans this off-season. Alabama pitcher and Dothan native Landon Brazell transferred to Troy State after not seeing much action as a pitcher this year for the Tide.

"He was a highly touted pitcher coming out of high school, but for whatever reason he didn't pitch much this season," Pierce said. "He will be joining us this school year."
