The African American Community Outreach Enrichment Program is always searching for ways to help make Troy and Pike County better places to live and to work.

One of those ways is to assist high school juniors and seniors in learning how to finance their college educations.

“There are many opportunities for young people to get assistance in financing their college educations including scholarships and grants,” said program member Angela McCray. “But, you have to know where to find these opportunities.”

From 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27, the African American Community Outreach Enrichment Program will host a “Ready! Set! Go!” workshop at the Colley Senior Complex at 715 Elm Street in Troy. The workshop is free and will provide information on financial assistance that is available for high school seniors who are college bound.

The information that will be provided is rather detailed so the workshop is a “come and stay” event. Refreshments will be served.

“Anyone who is planning to go to college in the next year or two will benefit from this workshop,” McCray said.

The “Ready! Set! Go!” workshop is the latest in community events planned by the newly organized outreach program to benefit all ages.

“The African American Community Outreach Enrichment Program was organized in August 2009 and its first event was the 2009 Empower Our Youth Conference.

“Other events were the Stay in School program and the Mental Health program,” McCray said. “The ‘Learn to Finance Your College Education Program’ will be of interest and value to those who will be entering college in 2010 or 2011 and we hope many will take advantage of this opportunity.”
