Margaret M.R. Smith

Margaret McQueen Richardson Smith, age 90, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2011, in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., after a brief battle with bladder cancer.

Services will be at 11 a.m. on Dec. 19 at the chapel of Dillard Funeral Home in Troy. Burial will follow in Green Hills Cemetery in Troy with Dillard Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smith, a native of Greenville and long time resident of Troy, moved to Ft. Walton about a decade ago to be near her son and grandchildren. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Troy where she taught Sunday school for many years. A former Girl Scout leader, she also participated in the Troy Homemakers Club and was an avid gardener. In Ft. Walton, she was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and participated in its women’s activities.

Mrs. Smith was the widow of James Clynard Richardson and Ray Pershing Smith. She was first widowed as a young woman with an infant son. Later she married Ray Smith and they raised their family in Troy.

She loved cooking and gardening and few ever left her house without a meal, a piece of pie or a slice of cake. Many in her family and friends, as well as former neighbors on Second Avenue, still nourish the amaryllis she gave them and have passed down the recipes for her cakes and other goodies.

Survivors include her son, James C. Richardson, Jr. and his wife, Becky,

of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; her daughter, Cynthia Wall and her husband, Jeff, of

Flowood, Miss.; granddaughters, Christine Pickett, her husband, John, and

their daughters, Jessica and Emily, of Sumter, S.C., and Sara Duvall and her husband, Canaan, of Madison; her sister, Virginia Boone of Tuscaloosa; and her two sisters-in-laws, Mildred Toole of Montgomery and Lucy Kilpatrick of Rutledge. Serving as pallbearers will be Thad Yancy, Jr., Harold Kilpatrick, Tommy Dillard, George Smith, Tony Toole, and Canaan Duvall.
