The Charles Henderson High School Trojans hosted the Carroll High Eagles of Ozark in area play and the home team did not disappoint. Behind a stifling defense and some hot outside shooting the Trojans were able to secure a 54-33 win.
The first quarter saw the home team race out to an early lead while the guests seemed to struggle to hit their stride. Tyler Mitchell got the game’s first two baskets on a steal and a follow of a teammate’s miss while Carroll got hit with a technical foul for hanging on the rim after a botched lob attempt. This seemed to typify the efforts of the Eagles in their struggles to score.
The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the first quarter. Davantez Jackson added back – to back three pointers from the corner to push the lead out to 14 – 6 CHHS at the end of the period.
The second quarter saw the home standing Trojans really get going offensively. A 9 – 1 run was sparked by a steal and lay-in by Dequante Shockley for CHHS and consecutive three point baskets by Jackson and Devonta Jordan. The quarter ended on an 8 – 0 run by the Trojans as Devon Woods capped the scoring with a steal and breakaway for a 34 – 11 halftime advantage.
The Trojans (9-7, 1-0) were led in scoring by Jackson and Jordan who had 9 points each at halftime. Mitchell contributed an outstanding defensive effort with four blocked shots and two steals in the first half alone.
The ladies were not as fortunate. Facing a 24 – 14 halftime deficit the Trojans were outscored 9 – 0 to begin the third quarter before rallying.
India Blakely scored 8 of her team high 18 points in the period as Charles Henderson cut the lead to 39 – 26 by period’s end.
The quarter saw the Trojans’ continue to cut into the lead for the visiting Eagles but just not be able to push the issue. A three point basket by Tysheria Ryles got the margin down to 6 at 38 – 44 but Carroll connected on two final free throws for the final margin of 46 – 38.
