Third-degree criminal mischief and breaking and entering charges are possible for a person, or group of people, who vandalized a series of cars in Troy over the weekend.

At least four vehicles were egged and one resident reported his vehicle was entered by a vandal who threw sardines inside.

“Those are just the ones we are aware of,” said Troy Police Sgt. Benny Scarbrough. “There may be other incidents that weren’t reported.”

On Friday, Jan. 7, police received the first round of calls about the vandalism. About 9:45 p.m., a caller from a Briar Hill Way address reported his vehicle had been egged. About 10:40 p.m. on Kate Avenue, another report came in that a resident found sardines in his vehicle.

Saturday morning, police got another set of calls. One from a Woodland Circle address about 10 a.m. and another from a Wilson Drive location about 10:30 a.m. Both of those callers reported vehicles that had been egged.

The last call came in to police on Sunday morning at 9:07 a.m. The caller said the vehicle had also been egged.

Scarbrough said there had been no arrests in any of the cases, but investigators are looking at the incidents separately and as a whole.

“Even if people don’t want to press charges, we’d still like to hear from them to see where other activity occurred and when it occurred,” Scarbrough said.

Scarbrough said criminal mischief degree charges depend on the level of damage or clean-up of property involved. In this case, the charges would be third-degree. There would also be a breaking and entering of a motor vehicle charge in the instance where a vandal used sardines.

“Cases like this can be frustrating because you are dealing with people who are doing mischevious things. And those people know the difference between right and wrong,” Scarbrough said.

Scarbrough also said he doesn’t suspect “any adults are riding around throwing eggs at vehicles.”
