As April 1 nears, excitement builds in Brundidge.

And soon, Wal-Mart will be building, too.

As the ground-breaking on the 922,000-square-foot center gets under way, residents throughout Pike County will be eagerly watching the development.

The center, with its promise of nearly 600 jobs, promises to be a real economic boost the area. And, despite issues with soil and concerns about handling the increased traffic, the center should prove to be that economic boost.

A key to that success will be guaranteeing that we have the infrastructure in place to handle the increased truck traffic along U.S. 231 and County Road 6. Officials predict more than 1,350 truck movements each day – that’s 675 trucks coming into the center, 675 coming out.

And that’s 675 more trucks on the already busy U.S. 231.

A turn lane on U.S. 231 is a minimum requirement, as is the expansion of County Road 6 to at least three lanes. That work will be expensive, but it is absolutely necessary for this project and, more important, for the citizens of Brundidge and Pike County.

It’s not nearly as exciting as seeing a nearly 1

million square foot building go up, but it’s as necessary.
