After an exciting first round win, the Charles Henderson soccer team was hoping for more of the same as it traveled to Mobile on Saturday to take part in the second round of the 5A state tournament against St. Paul’s Episcopal High School.

However, that was not the case.

Thanks to a 3-0 lead the Saints were able to build by halftime, the Trojans were never able to recover, eventually falling 8-0.

“It was a very different game,” assistant coach Adam Drinkwater said Monday night.

“(The team) didn’t have the same kind of cohesion as they did on Tuesday – for whatever reasons, they just couldn’t click.”

The Saints’ first goal came early in the game, while the other team came closer to the end of the first half.

Drinkwater said the majority of St. Paul’s goals came off set plays, which allowed its offense to get into scoring positions, and an aspect of the game that hurt the CHHS defense.

The Saints came out of the halftime break and scored its fourth goal of the game within minutes, before adding four more throughout the half.

“They had quality players,” the coach said. “They played well as a team, they controlled the ball well and the passed well.”

After the game, both Drinkwater and head coach Olaf Lieb talked to their players about the positives the Trojans had experienced during the past season.

“We told the team, they had a lot to be proud of,” Drinkwater said.

“They went undefeated in the Area play for the first time ever and advanced to the Elite Eight of the tournament.

“This was a great team and a great season, and all the kids have a lot to be proud of,” he added.
