Despite 30 point performance from Wilson, Troy State falls to Samford 68-65 in A-Sun

Despite a career-high 30 point performance from Lamayn Wilson, the Troy State men’s basketball team fell to a three-point barrage from Samford in an Atlantic Sun Conference matchup, 68-65.

"Our kids played hard, we just couldn’t get any breaks at the end," said Troy State head coach Don Maestri. "Lamayn had a great game. We had our chances to finish the game off, but we just couldn’t get a shot to fall." The Trojans (3-2, 1-1 A-Sun) jumped out early, taking a 12-5 lead on a three pointer by Robert Rushing, helped by a three-point play by Wilson to start the game.

Samford (4-2, 2-0 A-Sun) would answer back ending the half on a 25-8 run. The Bulldogs would hit seven three pointers, with Chris Weaver accounting for three and Eddie Harper hitting two. Corey Green would cap the run with a three pointer to end the half with Samford holding a 36-26 lead.

The two teams would come out and battle to start the second half, with Samford extending their lead to 13, 51-38, with just under 11 minutes left in the game.

The Trojans would rally with a 14-5 run to cut the Bulldogs’ lead to four, 56-52. Wilson went on a tear during that stretch, scoring seven points to get the Trojans back in the game.

Samford would answer back, stretching their lead back to 10, 63-53, on a tip in by Corey Green with 3:34 left in the game.

The Trojans would make another run, with Robert Rushing hitting two free throws to pull the Trojans within three, 65-62, with just over a minute left in the game.

Samford’s Green would hit two free throws to put the Bulldogs back up by five, but Herbert Evans would convert a three point play to get TSU back with in two, 67-65, with 15 seconds left.

Green was fouled and would hit one of two from the free throw line, giving the Bulldogs a three point lead with just 11 seconds remaining.

Rushing would bring the ball up the floor and kick to Ben Fletcher, whose shot clanged off the back of the rim at the buzzer giving the Bulldogs the win.

To along with his career-high 30 points, Wilson was 11-of-12 from the free throw line, to go along with his 9-of-19 shooting night. Rushing added 19 points and dished out three assists.

Samford had five players in double figures, led by Weaver’s 15. Green had 13, with Jon Mills adding 12 and Phillip Ramelli and Harper both scoring 10.

The Trojans are back in action again Saturday, Dec. 7, as they travel to take on the Runnin’ Utes of Utah. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
