Lady Trojans outhit Mercer in 3-0 win

Erika VanHootegem had 13 kills, 24 digs and four aces to lead the Troy State volleyball team past Mercer, 3-0, at Trojan Arena Saturday afternoon.
TSU (9-8, 4-3 Atlantic Sun) dominated the match, outhitting Mercer 246-.061 and collecting a season-high nine team blocks.
With the score tied at 11 in the first game, TSU went on a 14-6 run to take a 25-17 lead. The Trojans took the game, 30-20, thanks in large part to seven kills from Erika VanHootegem and six from Haven Triboulet.
Game two was a carbon copy of the first game as the teams traded points until the score was 7-6 in favor of the Trojans. TSU won 12 of the next 18 points and cruised to a 30-23 win.
TSU never trailed in the third game and won it going away, 30-20.
All six TSU starters recorded at least five kills, including Triboulet, who finished with 12. Rachel Hassan bounced back from her worst match all season Friday night against Georgia State to record seven kills on .383 hitting.
Mercer (15-13, 1-7) was led by Jennifer Smith, who had 12 kills and eight digs. Bonnie Sample had 11 assists and a team-high nine digs off the bench.
TSU will step out of conference play next Tuesday and travel to Birmingham to face UAB at 7 p.m.
