The top spots in all seven classifications of the Alabama Sports Writers Poll remained the same in week six of the high school football season.

Hoover (6A), Homewood (5A), T.R. Miller (4A), Phil Campbell (3A), Leroy (2A), Courtland (1A), and Glenwood (AISA), all held on to their No. 1 rankings, by virtue of wins last week.

Prattville is fourth in 6A and should pick up their fifth win of the year when they play Carver-Montgomery, a team whose last win was in 1998.

In 5A, Wilcox-Central remained second in the poll, 10 points ahead of No. 3 Benjamin Russell. The Jaguars, who had been dominating all opponents, played their closest game of the season last Friday night against Thomasville, winning 26-18. An end-of-the-season trip to Camden awaits Charles Henderson High and should the Trojans win out, that game could be for the Class 5A Region 2 title.

However, CHHS head coach Hugh Fountain still knows there are plenty of games yet to be played for his team.

"I think the region this year is a lot tougher then it was last season," he said. "Greenville’s better, Southside-Selma and Monroe County are better, and Wilcox has been playing great football."

Two teams on CHHS’s schedule will have difficult going this weekend as last week’s opponent Hillcrest-Evergreen takes on the No. 1 team in Class 4A, T.R. Miller. Andalusia, the Trojans’ opponent on Oct. 26, will play this week’s No. 2, UMS-Wright.

The only Class 3A Region 2 team Pike County High School has fallen to, Lanett, continues to steadily climb the 3A polls, coming in at No. 8 this week. Washington County is No. 9 with Plainview at No. 10.

Goshen’s playoff nemesis from a year ago, the Leroy Bears, is still No. 1 in Class 2A and will play surprising 1A McKenzie this Friday night. After going 3-37 in the last four years, the Tigers are off to a 4-0 start under new head coach Shane Smothers.

With a 14-7 win over Highland Home last week, Straughn cracked back into the 2A poll at No. 10. The Flying Squadron dropped out of the poll with a 3-1 record.

Courtland, who travels to face Pike County next Friday night in Brundidge, remains No. 1 in Class 1A.

Glenwood Academy continues to roll along with a 5-0 record and a No. 1 ranking in the AISA poll. Pike Liberal Arts faces No. 2 Monroe Academy this Friday night. Mobile Christian and Macon-East are third and fourth, respectively.

SMCA is fifth and will face another unbeaten this week in Autauga Academy.
