The Highland Home Flying Squadron knocked off No. 1 Clay County 7-6 last week and moved up to No. 6 in this week’s Class 2A high school football poll, according to the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

Clay County ranked No. 1 since the beginning of the year and the defending 2A state champs, fell to No. 7.

Highland Home will be in Covington County to play Straughn, who fell out of the top ten after being beat last week by Washington County.

Wilcox-Central proved that Andalusia’s 14-0 win over Hillcrest-Evergreen two week’s ago was no fluke and did even more damage to the Jaguars last Friday, beating them 44-0. That prompted a move up to No. 2 in the Class 5A poll for Wilcox-Central.

Hillcrest is Charles Henderson’s opponent for this Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

Eufaula cracked into the top ten for the first time this season at No. 9 in the Class 5A rankings. The Tigers have outscored opponents 124-7 three games into the season. Pike County scored the lone touchdown of the year allowed by Eufaula, in the Tigers 40-7 opening season win over the Bulldogs.

Lanett, who also beat the Bulldogs 24-20, in Pike County’s second game of the year, was also voted into the top ten by the ASWA. Lanett comes in at No. 10 in the Class 3A poll.

G.W. Long is third this week, following last Friday night’s win over rival Brantley.

After a 20-plus point win over Fort Dale Academy a week ago, Mobile Christian is ranked No. 3 this week in the AISA poll. Glenwood tops the rankings at No. 1, while Fort Dale falls to No. 7. Class A runners-up last season, SMCA enters this week at No. 9 in the state.

Other top ranked teams are: Hoover (6A), Homewood (5A), T.R. Miller (4A), Phil Campbell (3A), Leroy (2A), and Courtland (1A).
