SELMA – As was the scene around many high schools across the country, at Meadowview Christian on Friday night in the match-up between the Trojans and Pike Liberal Arts, ceremonies were held prior to the game and at halftime to honor Americans who lost their lives on Tuesday to terrorist attacks.
The Selma Fire Department participated in a raising of the flag, which once it reached the top was slowly lowered to half-mast as a symbol of the nation’s mourning for its dead.
The fire department and Selma police stood at attention and parade rest during the pregame ceremony.
"God Bless America" was sung by a young girl, whose voice cracked with emotion in the final stanza of the song. A Selma fireman then followed with a moving rendition of the "The Star Spangled Banner."
Fireworks were set off and the Meadowview football team burst through a spirit banner beneath the goal posts, waving an American flag as they ran onto the field.
Miniature flags were given out to fans and some flags lined the sidewalks leading to the home team’s stands.
At halftime, the Pike Liberal Arts School cheerleaders joined the Meadowview cheerleaders and dance team, as well as members of the Selma Fire Department, at mid-field for a candlelight vigil and moment of silence. One lone fireman stood in the center of the circle with a flag raised.
Lee Greenwood’s "God Bless the USA" was then played over the stadiums loud speakers.
