After falling 55-51 back on Jan. 8, Pike County will have a chance for revenge when it takes on Abbeville tonight in Abbeville.

In the two teams’ last meeting, the Bulldogs turned the ball over 36 times against Abbeville’s pressure defense, with most of those turnovers coming in the first half.

PCHS made some halftime adjustments and switched to a full-court press of its own in the fourth quarter, which helped the Bulldogs to come from being behind by 12 points to actually leading in the final minute. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs could not hold on, and were denied their first area win.

Despite all that, head coach William Moguel said the experience should help the team today.

“With them, having played already helps a lot because they’re just going to come in and do what they do,” Moguel said. “We’re just going to prepare for what we’ve already seen.”

One of the challenges facing Pike County today is an increased need for conditioning. Rather than a high school-sized court like Pike County has in Brundidge, Abbeville is home to a college-sized court that is both wider and longer than the Bulldogs are accustomed to.

“One of the things is that we’ve got to be able to handle the different size of the court they have there,” Moguel said. “They have a college-sized court, so we’ve just got to be able to defend a little bit more space and a little more floor.”

The junior varsity game between Pike County and Abbeville will begin at 4:30 p.m., with the varsity girls’ and boys’ game to follow.
