After taking ten straight, which included a tournament championship in Panama City last weekend, the Troy Post 70 Junior Legion team was handed a loss on Tuesday night by Auburn University-Montgomery.
AUM took a 6-3 win over Post 70, who fell to 14-6 on the season with the loss.
Justin Sims was charged with the loss for Troy, but Post 70 head coach Russ Jinright said the young pitcher "still pitched a great game."
"We just had a few unfortunate errors at the worst times," said Jinright. "Justin did a good job for us on the mound, but our defense didn’t support him. He’s had bad luck all season with that."
Sims pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters and allowing six hits.
AUM took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning before Wesley Wright was able to come home on a squeeze play bunt and tie the game up in the top of the fourth inning. Wright had reached prior to his tying run on a triple.
Troy took a brief 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth. Chase Kelly was hit by a pitch and Brett Pierce reached on a single. Another bunt by Clint Pugh allowed both runners to score.
But AUM came back to score four runs in their half of the fifth to claim the 6-3 lead.
Sims had two hits to lead Post 70 at the plate. Wright, Pierce and David Doty also had hits for Troy.
Currently, Post 70 is batting .355 as a team while holding opponents to a .195 hitting percentage. In 20 games played Post 70 pitchers have struck out 121 opposing batters while walking 57.
The Troy Junior Legion team will be on the road today to play Slocomb and will return to action at Frazier Field on Monday, July 2 against Northview.
