‘Seeing Troy in a different light’

Traveling on U.S. Highway 231 is a little different these days.
Sure, there is more traffic as vacationers take the route through Troy to the beaches, but there is something else. Troy looks a little brighter.
Thanks to Troy Mayor Jimmy Lunsford and the Troy City Council streetlights have been placed from the Highway 29 overpass to Highway 87. The lighting project is something city leaders have been working on for some time, and now they have seen part of the project come to fruition.
"I’ve wanted to do this for many years," Lunsford said in an earlier interview.
The lighting project is part of what he hopes will be the first step of a beautification project on U.S. 231.
When the lighting project is complete, light will illuminate Troy from the north beginning at the Conecuh River bridge and will end just south of Edge Regional Medical Center.
Placing the lights on U.S. 231 has fallen in the capable hands of the City of Troy Utility Department, South Alabama Electric Cooperative and the Department of Transportation, which came up with a $400,000 grant that provided the materials.
But there is more to the lighting project than just making Troy more beautiful, there is a safety aspect. The lights along the highway will increase visibility and will deter criminals from breaking into local businesses, and drivers will be able to see better when traveling through Troy.
We think the lighting project is a good idea for Troy and its residents. When visitors or travelers are coming to or going through Troy and reach they lights they will know they have arrived in a city that is not only cares about its appearance but is also concerned about the safety of its citizens and visitors.
