After going 6-for-6 in their doubleheader sweep of Alabama A&M yesterday, Troy State’s Renie Mitchell was named Trans America Athletic Conference "Player of the Week."
"Stats speaking, it is obvious that Renie had an excellent weekend offensively," said head coach Melanie Davis, who won her 300th game at Troy State with the sweep of UAB. "She is a tremendous athlete and competitor and I am extremely happy for her that she received this very deserving honor. I look for Renie to play a huge role in our team’s success throughout this season."
Mitchell, a senior from Rising Sun, Md., helped lead to Troy State to a 4-0 record after the opening weekend. After going 0-for-2 in the first game against UAB, Mitchell would 8-for her next-9, including three doubles.
In the second game against UAB, Mitchell scored the go-ahead run that paved the way for Troy State’s 3-1 win. Against Alabama A&M, she lit up the Bulldogs in the first game, going 4-for-4, with three runs scored and three RBIs. In the second game, she continued her torrid pace, going 2-for-2 with a run scored and another RBI.
Mitchell is the first TAAC "Player of the Week" this season. Florida Atlantic’s Nikki Myers was named "Pitcher of the Week". Myers is 2-1 on the season, having stuck out 24 in 18.1 innings. She has pitched in four games and has an ERA of 0.38.
The Lady Trojans are back in action again on Friday as they host the 2001 Lady Trojan Invitational. The first game is scheduled for 10 a.m., with Troy State facing off against Middle Tennessee State at the Troy SportsPlex.
