A well-known Troy pianist will be in concert at 2:30 p.m., Sunday Feb. 11 at Southside Baptist Church in celebration of the founding of the Troy Music Study Club.

The Founders Day Program, sponsored by the Troy Music Study Club and the Troy Council on the Arts and Humanities, will feature Sarah Ann Whaley in a program of classical music, including pieces by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Chopin.

Also included in the concert will be

Liszt’s "Liebertraum"

and Rachmaninoff’s "Prelude."

Betty Caldwell said the two organizations are proud to have an accomplished pianist such as Sarah Ann Whaley as the featured artist for the Founders Day 2001 program.

"Sarah Ann is a native of Troy," Caldwell said. "While she was an elementary and high school student, she studied under her mother, Margaret Gellerstedt Whaley, and a cousin, Mary Murphree Selman, both of whom were outstanding pianists. She attended college at Montevallo and was a student of M. Ciolkowski. She graduated with a degree in music and with honors."

Whaley retuned home to Troy and taught piano the Troy City and Pike County school systems and at Troy State College until her retirement.

Caldwell said anyone who enjoys beautiful music will want to hear Sarah Ann Whaley in concert.

"The concert is free and the public is invited to attend," she said. "There will be a reception, hosted by the two organizations, immediately following the concert. We also want to invite everyone to join us for this time of fellowship."

The Founders Day program will celebrate the founding of the Troy Music Study Club in 1905. The club was federated in 1907, making it one of the oldest federated music clubs in Alabama.

The Troy Council on the Arts and Humanities was organized in 1972 for the purpose of creating an enrichment of the arts for the citizens of Troy.

Similar in purpose, the two organizations often work together to bring fine arts opportunities to the citizens of Troy.
