Four Maine players scored in double figures, led by reserve guard Tory Cavalieri’s 17 points, as the Black Bears outscored Troy State by 17 points over the final 20 minutes and pulled away for a 72-59 win at Trojan Arena.
The win by the Black Bears (2-1) spoiled the home opener for Troy State (0-2), which shot just 32 percent from the floor and hit only 9-of-28 shots from 3-point range. Troy State led 32-28 at the intermission.
"We just really couldn’t seem to hit our shots when we needed to in the second half," Troy State head coach Don Maestri said. "They crashed the boards on us and kept finding the open shot. We couldn’t get the big stop when we needed it most."
The Trojans had two players finish in double figures scoring, led by Matt Holman’s 20 points and Lemayn Wilson’s 17. Robert Rushing and Jacova Jenkins each had eight points in the loss.
Troy State returns to action on Thursday at home against Florida A&M. Tipoff is schedule for 7 p.m. at Trojan Arena.
